SESLOC Spotlight highlights local organizations that make the Central Coast the best place to live.

The San Luis Obispo County Housing Trust Fund is a nonprofit that works with developers, other nonprofits, and government agencies to increase the supply of affordable housing in San Luis Obispo County. Directors Tom Sherman and Vivian Krug Cotton explain how the organization supports the development of affordable housing in our community:

San Luis Obispo County Housing Trust Fund

Industry: Nonprofit

Serving the Central Coast since: 2003

How many employees? 3

How many volunteers? 7 on our Commission, 9 on our Board of Directors.

What’s your mission? Our mission is to increase the supply of affordable housing for very low, low, and moderate income residents of San Luis Obispo County, including households with special needs.

What’s unique about the HTF? Rather than build or operate housing directly, the HTF provides financing and technical assistance to help private developers, nonprofit corporations, and government agencies produce and preserve homes that working families, seniors on fixed incomes, and persons with disabilities can afford to rent or buy.  To date, the financial and technical assistance delivered by the HTF has resulted in the creation of over 1,100 units of affordable housing throughout the County.

What do you attribute to your success? Our success can be directly attributed to the passion for our mission shown by our staff, our Commissioners, our Board members, and our financial supporters over the years.  We can also attribute our success to our own community as a whole because they fully recognize the dire need for the creation of more affordable housing throughout the County.

What advice would you give someone interested in supporting your mission? The HTF always welcomes the financial support of our community members in all forms as a meaningful way to help alleviate the burden of homelessness faced by so many in our communities. The HTF invites you to learn more about our mission, our activities and our accomplishments by visiting us on Facebook, LinkedIn, or via our website. You can also call us at (805) 543-5970.
