SESLOC Spotlight highlights local organizations that make the Central Coast the best place to live.

The San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum supports growing minds with hands-on activities for kids to learn by doing — and by providing resources and programs for at-home learning. Michelle Jenkins, Executive Director, explains how the nonprofit museum guides learning through fun:

San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum

Industry: Nonprofit

Serving the Central Coast since: 1990

How many employees? 10

How many volunteers? 16

What’s your mission? Inspiring learning through play.

What’s unique about the SLO Children’s Museum? Our tag line is “where learn-by-doing begins!” and that really sums it up. Everything here is experiential, investigative, and imaginative. The modern town square.

What do you attribute to your success? Creative and hardworking employees and a supportive community.

What advice would you give someone interested in supporting your mission? Jump in! Our neighbors and friends suggest exhibits, sponsor our annual fundraiser, and volunteer on our committees and boards. The museum also recently reopened after 13 months of being closed for COVID. Guests can plan their visit by making a reservation online (check out our website to learn more). The SLO Children’s Museum is also the Mission Plaza Pop Up Partner during the month of July, so stop by and check it out.
